The BJP secured 10 percent or more votes on nine Lok Sabha seats in Kerala in 2014 but barring Thiruvananthapuram, it came nowhere near even the victory mark. However, in 2019, riding on the Sabarimala sentiment, the party sees a realistic chance for itself on at least four seats. Attingal is a Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala and is one of the state's 20 parliamentary
constituencies. The current MP from Attingal is Anirudhan Sampath from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI-M.
Sampath was elected as the Attingal MP in the 2014 general election after he won over 3.92 lakh votes, defeating Bindhu Krishna. Bindu Krishna was the Indian National Congress's candidate in Attingal.
Over 8.59 lakh voters took part in the election in Attingal, where the poll percentage was 68.67 per cent.
The Congress-UDF has fielded Adoor Prakash as its candidate against LDF’s sitting MP Anirudhan Sampath. Sampath is a three-time MP is an immensely popular figure in the constituency.
A Sampath, who will be contesting for the third time in a row, is a calm and composed character and enjoys the support of people in the constituency, albeit some complaints about road development in the region.
On the other hand, there is Adoor Prakash who feels that Attingal is a challenge that he looks up to. During campaigning for the polls, Prakash constantly stressed on the need for more developmental projects in the region. He also targeted the LDF government over its stand on the Sabarimala issue.
The Congress-led UDF has failed to secure a victory from this Lok Sabha constituency for the last 18 years—something that Adoor Prakash hopes to break.
It seems that that main contest in Attingal this time will be between development and issues Sabarimala. Meanwhile, NDA has fielded BJP’s Sobha Surendran as its candidate from Attingal.
Unlike the UDF and LDF candidates, Sobha says she wants to talk more about the state government’s stand on Sabarimala row and attacked both for not living up to the expectations of the constituency.
Polling was held in this parliamentary constituency in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019 on April 23.
The overall voter turnout in Attingal Lok Sabha constituency was recorded at 74.23 per cent.
Results for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections will be announced on May 23.
